Donkin & Co Ltd, Walkergate

Donkin & Co Ltd were manufacturers of ship's steering gear and were based at the St Andrew's Works in Walkergate, a suburb of Newcastle. David Donkin commenced business in 1840 and was initially based in St Andrew's Street, Gallowgate, Newcastle. In 1876 one of his sons George Donkin was joined in partnership by Bryce Gray Nichol a well-known engineer on Tyneside and the firm became known as Donkin and Nichol. In 1879 they commenced the manufacture of ships' steering gears.

In 1892 Bryce Nichol died and the company was restyled as Donkin & Co. They moved to larger premises at Walkergate in 1901 due to the increased volume of work and in 1919 the company was incorporated as Donkin & Co Ltd. Additional products provided by the company included hydraulic and electric deck machinery, watertight doors, rudder carriers and hopper door operating equipment. The company later became a subsidiary of Clarke, Chapman & Co.
