The above map is dated 1859 and is approximately 0.4 miles in width.
The A & R Hopper yard was on Nelson Street near the mouth of the Ouseburn, on the upriver side of the bank of the Tyne. Next to it was the exit from the Victoria Tunnel, which served the Spital Tongue Colliery Staiths. The Hoppers were advertising the erection of their new facility, the Nelson Patent Slip, in April 1830. The slip was capable of hauling up vessels of 400 tons on to the slipway for repairs of all descriptions. |
