The location of the yard as shown on a section from the Ordnance Survey map for 1897

Joseph T Eltringham was originally based at Stone Quay, South Shields, where they carried out their business of Shpbuilders and Engineers. The engineering side of the business concentrated on boilers, both for marine and land use and they did not build marine engines. Engines for their ships were built by other local firms at North and South Shields. However, with their move to Willington Quay, they also started to manufacture their own range of marine engines. The company was reconstructed financially in 1919 but the yard closed during the severe recession of 1922.
