Black, Hawthorn & Co, Gateshead


Black, Hawthorn and Company of Gateshead built locomotives for collieries and ironworks and were also marine steam engine builders. In 1865 William Black went into partnership with Thomas Hawthorn and others and they took over the Quarry Field Works of R Coultard and Co. In 1896 the company ceased trading having built over 1,100 locomotives and more than 160 marine engines for the shipbuilders of Blyth, Tyne, Wear and Tees.
