William Edward Boutland was born in Bill Quay in 1819 and served his apprenticeship with his father William Snr. William Snr was a builder of wooden colliers at Bill Quay and a well known salvage operator throughout the North East of England.
At the death of his father in 1852, William Jr took over the salvage business himself and eventually commenced building ships at Bill Quay in 1870. However he stopped in 1879 when he leased Barker's Dock at South Shields as a ship repairer. Barker's Dock was then sold to Hepple & Co in 1896 and William Jr died in September 1899 in his 80th year.
