Shipbuilder: John Winlo, Howdon (1839 - 1845)

Shipbuilder: John & Peter Winlo, South Shields (1865 - 1874)

Above map shows the location of the Winlo yard. Map is copyright of the Ordnance Survey

The name of the Winlo family in connection with shipping matters first appears in about 1839, first as John Winlo at Howdon and later as J & PC Winlo at South Shields. John & Peter Coats Winlo were: "Ship and boat builders and repairers, block and mast makers, joiners and blacksmiths. Their name is also, by tradition, attached to an old floating dock of a primitive type." PC Winlo died in about 1880 but the firm continued. - These words from Amy C Flagg

"On Saturday afternoon (07/10/1865), Messrs J & P Winlo launched from their building yard at the Stanhope Drops a ....... vessel named ENTERPRISE (cf). It is 35 years since a vessel was built at this yard and since that time the Stanhope Drops have been erected and the vessel had to pass underneath one of the arches from which there was but a space of about 3 feet." - Report from the Shields Daily Gazette
