The Shipbuilding Corporation Ltd was established in about 1941 to build ships on Government account.
The company re-opened two yards which had been bought up by the National Shipbuilders Security Ltd,
the Low Walker yard of Sir WG Armstrong, Whitworth & Co (Shipbuilders) Ltd and the Southwick,
Sunderland yard, which had been operated by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd between 1912 and 1933.
Both yards were closed in 1947.
On the Tyne, the first five ships built used the shipbuilder name of Armstrong, Whitworth & Co (Shipbuilders) Ltd.
