| the new destroyer HOSTE suffered a steering engine failure. | |
| She was ordered back to Scapa escorted by the destroyer NEGRO. | |
| Off the Orkney Islands the weather worsened and the temporary repairs | |
| to the HOSTE's steering failed and she sheered to starboard. | |
| The NEGRO was only 400yds astern and ran into her aft end. | |
| The collision knocked two depth charges off HOSTE, which exploded. | |
| The explosion blew in the bottom of NEGRO, which sank quickly. | |
| HOSTE was also seriously damaged and she sank later. | |
| 50 crew from the two ships died. |
