Shipbuilder: James, John, Paul & Philip Laing, South Shields (1807 - 1845)
The Scottish Laing family, John Laing and his son David, commenced shipbuilding in Sunderland at North Sands in 1793. John was also joined by his brother Philip, a yeoman farmer from Fifeshire.
By 1804 Laing was the largest shipbuilding employer on the Wear.
The partners set up in business at South Shields in 1805 as Messrs John Laing & Co using an existing dock next to the dock and yard of Mr Fairles (marked as Young's Dock on the map of 1855).
The partnership was dissolved in 1822 and Philip set up at the Lawe with a "patent slipway near the sea". This was probably a piece of ground near the Low Beacon.
