Lancelot Kirkup & Co was a shortlived company based at St Peter's Quay in 1857.
The above map shows the probable location of the yard.
A shipyard to the west (left) of this location would have been described as "at Mushroom" and one to the east (right) would have had the large dock facility mentioned.
The company was both an iron shipbuilder and a general engineering company.
The press cutting for the launch of BRILLIANT mentions bridge work for the Border Counties Railway.
The company was declared bankrupt in March 1858 despite having contracts for two further vessels (see BRILLIANT press cutting).
It is understood that Lancelot Kirkup emigrated to Canada after the failure of the business.
