Shipbuilder: William Bennett Hornby, Willington Quay (1869 - 1871)

The location of Hornby's yard is shown on the above map of 1897 which is copyright of the Ordnance Survey

William Bennett Hornby was from Sunderland and a former manager at the Doxford yard at Pallion. In 1869 he took over a yard at Willington Quay that had formerly been used by Marshall Brothers. His intention was to build "iron and composite ships" but he had little success and he sold out to the Cole Brothers in 1871.
