Shipbuilder: Cole Brothers, Willington Quay (1871 - 1876)

The location of the Cole Bros yard is shown on the above map of 1897 which is copyright of the Ordnance Survey

The firm was founded in 1871 by two brothers from the South of England, Henry AB Cole and Robert E Cole. They took over a site previously occupied by WB Hornby and the Marshall Brothers and had a reputation for quality ships but struggled financially, finally folding in 1876. Their emphasis on building iron sailing ships rather than steam ships may have been a factor. Their manager William J Bone, with a few friends, finally bought the site and set up the Tyne Iron Shipbuilding Company.
