Comments: 18/04/1931: Whilst under tow of United Towing’s tug NORMAN on delivery voyage
to Le Havre they encountered a severe storm some 15 miles SE of Flamborough Head
The tow wire parted and CYCLOPE was presumed foundered as nothing was seen of her again
From the Sunday Times of 19/04/1931
"A ship that walks - The Tyne Built Dredger CYCLOPS which left for Le Havre (France) on Thursday (16th April 1931), is one of the most remarkable craft ever constructed. The design and machinery all came from America. The first vessel of its kind to be built in England has no propelling machinery but some extraordinary plant enables her to raise herself several feet in the water, and her 70ft legs, which operate rapidly, jab into the river or seabed. The dipper can tear into solid rock and scoop up ten tons of material at each dip. Five steam engines are aboard and can be worked from the bridge. The CYCLOPE will dredge Le Havre Harbour."
All dredging machinery was supplied by the Buckyrus-Erie Company of Milwaukee and assembled on the Tyne
Following the loss of the CYCLOPE a replacement dredger was ordered called DRAGON
