14/12/1883: On the return leg of her maiden voyage, was steaming east bound at night, up the English Channel with a cargo of Russian grain, oil cake and feathers.
The ship’s master lost his bearings when they steamed into a dense fog bank, and consequently drove onto the Brook Ledges on the Isle of Wight.
With difficulty the local RNLI lifeboat brought all 31 crew ashore.
Subsequently the owners ordered a replacement from the same yard, and
“Castlecrag” (2) was built as yard No165 entering service in March 1884
