Shipbuilder: John Wright, South Shields (1773 - 1803)

John Wright was connected by marriage with the Wallis family, having married Jane Wallis in 1756. He may well have taken a position in the old shipyard, however Robert Wallis died in 1781. The first mention of John as a shipbuilder is in 1779 when a brigantine was advertised for sale on John Wright's Ways at the Low End of South Shields. When he died in 1803 he was described as a shipowner, so he seems to have retired from being a shipbuilder some years earlier.
