Shipbuilder: George K Smith, Whitehill Point, North Shields (1882 - 1883)

George Kay Smith and Thomas James Bell, carried on business as iron shipbuilders at Whitehill Point, North Shields, under the style of George K Smith & Co. The company was declared bankrupt in November 1883 and the yard and associated plant was auctioned off in March 1884. It is interesting to note that their last two contracts LOCKSLEY & BLANCHE are shown in contemporary Lloyd's Registers as built by Wallsend Slipway & Engineering Co Ltd. Their construction coincides with the failure of the company, so it is not clear whether Wallsend Slipway took over the contracts to complete them, or Wallsend Slipway were in fact the prime contractors and had subcontracted the hulls to GK Smith & Co in the first place.
