Charles W Taylor & Son Ltd, South Shields

Charles W Taylor & Son Ltd, iron founders at South Shields
This firm was established in 1890 by Charles Wardrope Taylor (son in law of John Readhead, shipbuilder) at Templetown in South Shields. The firm initially made castings for reciprocating engines, but later specialised in castings for turbines. It was also noted in the 1920s for propellor castings. The site was considerably extended in 1909 and at some stage additional premises were acquired in Hill Street, South Shields. CW Taylor died in 1918 and was succeeded by his son Charles Reginald Readhead Taylor (died 1929). The firm was incorporated 1918, shortly before the founder's death, but most of the surviving records start in 1949.
The business was wound up in 2003, by which time the majority of business was for the export market.
